So I kind of missed a few things in completing The Groop web build, one of them being the addition of our standard
Rules Of Engagement aka our “Read This Before Contributing” blurb which lays the ground rules for playing in the sandpit. These rules are necessary, I think so anyway, although ours tend to be an extremely loose framework in which to have a really good think about what you’re thinking before you say something along the lines of “That is fucked on so many levels..I knew these people were parasites..but this pretty sad. I pity any of the desperate fucks who will sign up for this…”. It turns out FlipYourWig has an
interesting past: “FlipYourWig has been a member since July 4, 2008. Starting 4 Topics, replying 60 times and has 0 Friends on Mess+Noise.” 60 replies in a year and looks like we scored the user’s most promising work. Nice.
Our rules were remixed from a post written by
Laurel Papworth – one switched on lady when it comes to all things online community/social – which I found to be spot on but I hope have allowed for expression pretty much in any form unless that of complete dickheadedness. You need to allow the conversation to flow without it getting sucked into a bad vibe and not being able to become unstuck. The reason I used an example from Mess+Noise is because a clever individual that goes by the name of Orange Julius dropped news of The Groop in with a nice jab at Modular’s biggest fan, Ben Butler, the result being possibly one of the best threads you’d find on the forum next to the
Elf Wizard thread that had us all learning the benefits of leaving a deposit. If you’re the one who took it.
I’m not going to get into it (even though I do have my own opinion on what was said over on M+N), I’d rather you make up your own minds, and hang around to see what Groop members who have signed up have to say about the experience. And have a read of the M+N thread as it does travel in a good direction and kind of does reinforce my belief in that these policies, as loose as they are and can be, do allow for “good chat”. And yeah I’ve had a good peruse of M+N’s
own usage policy.
Talk is good. No news is bad news. Play nice or you’ll end up being the kid finding the turd in the sandpit.

It’s easy to be a douchebag under the blanket of net anonymity or facelessness, but the rules are great if we’re going to make something positive out of this. As one of the Groop, I don’t know how the others feel but I can say for myself that there will always be cynics and that’s their opinion. I’m more excited to meet other creative types from other fields and use the experience to push my creative thinking somewhere new and hopefully challenging. If you’re going to be creative and continually worry about your ideas being stolen, I say pick something else to do. But that’s my humble opinion.
