Since his early drawings, Chinese artist Xia Xiaowan has restlessly been pushing the boundaries of Western traditional realistic painting. His goal, in all of this, has been to explore, by means of expanded and diffracted viewpoints, a new and ‘true vision’ which goes beyond the principles of physics.
Using special pencils, paints and glass panes, he creates 3D, spatial artworks which often feel to me like a trip to the anatomy museum. They remind me of Damien Hirst’s pickled animals, or that horse scene from the movie The Cell – but there’s something more ethereal or spiritual about them.
