Since his early drawings, Chinese artist Xia Xiaowan has restlessly been pushing the boundaries of Western traditional realistic painting. His goal, in all of this, has been to explore, by means of expanded and diffracted viewpoints, a new and ‘true vision’ which goes beyond the principles of physics.
Using special pencils, paints and glass panes, he creates 3D, spatial artworks which often feel to me like a trip to the anatomy museum. They remind me of Damien Hirst’s pickled animals, or that horse scene from the movie The Cell – but there’s something more ethereal or spiritual about them. MORE
Bomb the Bass feat. Fujiya & Miyagi: Butterfingers.
This film clip was so simple and effective that it didn’t really bother me that I hadn’t properly heard the music before I decided that I liked it (for about a week). The Perish Factory created this synth puppet that no one with a heart couldn’t help but love.
It is with great pride and a whole load of relief that we can happily report that The Groop’s submission for the Extra Cheese exhibition, “Zoetron” – a modern take on the zoetrope – was a success amongst the gallery goers at the Saatchi Gallery in The Rocks, last Thursday. Enjoy the pictures. It’s like you were almost there.

I could of created a long descriptive but informative paragraph explaining why this particular designer stimulated my outlook or line of thought which is better known and associated with something that directly relates to graphic design, but instead I’ve summarised what could have been into two dot points as noted below. Enjoy.
1. Innovation: “Creating something brilliant in such a way that it takes twice as long and costs three times as much as the old fashioned way of doing the same thing”.
2. Julien Vallee: A Graphic designer whom employs the use of innovation.

Phoenix at the Enmore last Wednesday was my favourite moment in live music from the past year. Not even a hard call, they absolutely nailed the whole experience, but I couldn’t find much in the way of an inspiring film clip to put up here as a testament to their awesomeness.
What I did find was an interesting link between the French artists Phoenix, Kavinsky and Sebastien Tellier – they all have clips that remind me in a more colourful and abstract way of the movie ‘Tron’.
To illustrate the point here is Sebastien Tellier’s amazing clip for ‘Sexual Sportswear’ and a link to Phoenix’s ‘Run, Run, Run’ (they disabled embedding)
For the past two years Extra Cheese has aimed to integrate and encourage re-use within Australia’s emerging creative practice.
This years show requires contributors to include ‘retired’ art and/or design materials. Lots of creatives love to forage, collect and hoard, filling their studio corners and cupboards up with various creative materials that never again see the light of day. It’s time to dig some up again and put them to good use!
The horsehair of old paintbrushes. Perhaps some forgotten canvas frames. Maybe even a defunct computer mouse. Whatever the medium of choice, you will be sure to see some interesting outcomes from some of Sydney’s best emerging creative talent.
With each submission consisting of one emerging Australian artist and one emerging Australian designer, the artwork/design on display will be a unique marker of the thoughts and expressions that Australia’s next creative generation have to say about re-use within creative practice.

Nick Meek, is a photographer and by this, I mean he works for Kodak (or at least he should). His work deliberates a tasteful perfection which in my mind compliments that tacky bi-line (yet another Kodak moment) to a point of stronger accomplishment. His photos aren’t just encapsulating short periods of time, better an extensive period which summarizes more than a just moment.
So too recap in plain English… His photos are good and make me want to become a photographer, you should check his shit out. MORE
Wu-Tang Clan – Gravel Pit
Directed by Joseph Khan
Remember this one? This is what Wu-tang was doing on the weekend while Fred Flinstone was mowing the law – complete with a casino, prehistoric booty dancers and a minute-and-a-half long fight scene at the end that culminates in a ninja getting snatched by a T-rex.
While Jess Scully was studying Journalism and Law at the University of Technology, Sydney, she helped develop and launch STU, a monthly magazine showcasing the talents of emerging Australian creatives. She then took on the role of editor of Yen, a bi-monthly glossy title bridging the divide between art, design, style and social issues, before launching Hotpress, a monthly music magazine again placing local musicians, filmmakers in an international context.
